Afrikaans is 'n Nederfrankiese taal wat 'n lid is van die Germaanse taalgroep. Afrikaans is een van die jongste erkende tale. Dit is op 8 Mei 1925 as 'n amptelike taal erken, en is tans die derde jongste Germaanse taal wat amptelike status geniet, naas Faroërs (of Faroëes) wat in 1948 grondwetlik erken is en Luxemburgs (of Lëtzebuergesch) wat hierdie status in 1984 gekry het. Afrikaans is tans een van die elf amptelike tale van Suid-Afrika en daarnaas ook 'n belangrike taal van Namibië. Dit word deur ongeveer 6,59 miljoen sprekers in Suid-Afrika (13,5 persent van die totale bevolking) en in elf persent van alle Namibiese huishoudings as eerste taal gebruik. Afrikaans het uit 17de eeuse Nederlands ontwikkel en meer as 95 persent van sy woordeskat is van Nederlandse oorsprong.
